State College 500 8th Avenue, Lewiston ID 83501
The National Park Service Corps of Discovery II and Discovery
Expo will be open daily June 5 through 17 on the Lewis-Clark State

said Gerard Baker, superintendent of the Lewis and Clark National
Historic Trail. "It is an occasion to learn more about our
nation's history, including the history of American Indians, and
to think about our nation's future, where we want to be in 200
years."
The
central feature of Corps of Discovery II is the "Tent of
Many Voices." This 150-seat auditorium is a venue for cultural
arts demonstrations, folklore, music, living history presentations,
readings from the expedition journals and more. Programs reflect
a spectrum of nature, culture and history topics of particular

The
Summer of Peace Quilt & Hide Show
Wednesday through Saturday, June 1417
Student Union Building, Lewis-Clark State College 500 8th Avenue,
Lewiston ID 83501
This
unique event held June 14-17 will not only highlight an exquisite
array of handiwork by regional quilters themed around the "Peace
and Friendship" but it will also include hand processed animal
hides by Nez Perce artists in the form of painted robes and shields.
Tribes used animal skins for protection from the weather by making
them into clothes and blankets since they did not have textiles
like wool or cotton. Rawhide shields were used to guard against
enemies and once a man had achieved great respect as a warrior
the graphic symbols painted on his shield were recognized by his
people and the surrounding tribes to represent his status. By
adding this dimension to the show the audience will get a cross-cultural
interpretation of life in the nineteenth century.
The
show at the Student Union Building on Lewis-Clark State College
campus will feature a full size buffalo robe painted by four local
tribal artists depicting imagery that would have been in common
use around the time Lewis and Clark arrived in the Nimiipuu homelands.
Prizes
will be awarded for the quilt contest at the opening reception
on June 14, 2006 and the best of show will be announced at the
closing ceremonies on June 17, 2006. Entries are due by May 22,
2006.
